Tibet Healthcare Update

In Honor of Mother’s Day in the US — Save a Mother’s Life!

New Roof, Ayang Clinic in Rima Village, Eastern Tibet

The Amitabha Foundation has been involved in promoting health and education in Eastern Tibet since 2004. Our focus is Safe Home Childbirth, but while we have been improving birth outcomes, we have also been supporting the general health of all the nomads in the Rima Village and surrounding township areas. Click here for background on our project. In 2016 we were able to accomplish so much! Read our Trip Report from the visit to Rima in July, 2016. We will return to the area in August 2017 and need your help. This is what we accomplished last year; see below for our new plans:

  • Clinic roof replacement, exterior painting, and repair of interior water damage ($17,275)
  • 51 meter well at the clinic ($3,050)
  • New training program for three barefoot doctors apprenticing with clinic doctor
  • Training at Yushu County Hospital for two midwives
  • 100 Clean Birthing Kits ($4,000)
  • Stable infant vaccination program
  • 5-Year evaluation of Community Health Educator program

This year we need to raise $15,000 to pay salaries for 2 doctors, 3 medical trainees, 1 midwife and a new midwife trainee, and the head Community Health Educator. In addition, it will cost $6,000 for 150 birthing kits. The clinic staff has also asked us to raise funds to purchase grinding and rolling machines to make their own traditional Tibetan medicines. This is an excellent business idea to bring in much-needed income to the clinic and make it sustainable into the future. The head doctor has all the necessary knowledge and can train his apprentices to identify and harvest herbal compounds for the medicines. He has estimated it will cost $25-30,000 in initial start-up costs.

Many people and organizations have contributed to support our work in Tibet for the past 14 years. You can make a difference in the lives of these nomad families. A small investment can have a big impact on saving the lives of mothers and infants, and on the overall health of an entire community.

Updated May 31, 2017:

It is Amitabha Foundation Hong Kong’s pleasure and great honour to host the Hundred Wrathful and Peaceful Deities Empowerment to be bestowed by His Eminence Choeje Ayang Rinpoche to Hong Kong. Through the great compassion of His Eminence Choeje Ayang Rinpoche, such a supreme empowerment will be held in Hong Kong from 26-29 August 2017.  The Amitabha Foundation Hong Kong will be hosting the event at the International Trade & Exhibition Center at Kowloon Bay where the magnificent Hundred Deities Mandala will be installed.

Commonly known as the Hundred Deities, they include forty-two peaceful Deities and fifty-eight wrathful deities that one encounters during the bardo stage. If one has received the empowerment and blessing, and having seen their pictures in the past, one will recognise these deities as the reflections of the nature of Dharmadhatu and attain instantaneous liberation in the bardo stage.

At the spacious venue we have booked for the empowerment, we will be erecting a magnificent Hundred Deities Mandala with the help of lamas specially selected and sent by His Eminence.

Amitabha Foundation Hong Kong sincerely invite you to join us in this supreme empowerment. Bring along all your family, friends, loved ones, sangha, dharma brothers and sisters and everyone you come across between now and then.  The empowerment is free of charge to anyone who wishes to join.  We will not be able to arrange for meals & accommodation.

100 Peaceful and Wrathful Deities (Shitro) Puja for the New Year

Peaceful Deities Thangka AR Wrathful Deities Thangka AR
Mandala of 42 Peaceful Deities Mandala of 58 Wrathful Deities

From March 6-12, 2017, Ayang Rinpoche’s monastery in Bylakuppe, South India will hold the annual Shitro (100 Peaceful and Wrathful Deities) Puja to welcome in Losar (Tibetan New Year, February 27) and celebrate Chötrul Düchen (March 12). Chötrul Düchen is one of the four holy Buddhist festivals commemorating significant events in the life of the Buddha. During the first fifteen days of the new year, the Buddha displayed miracles for his disciples to increase their devotion. During this time, it is believed that the effects of positive actions are multiplied ten million times.

Ayang Rinpoche said about the 100 Peaceful and Wrathful Deities practice, “It is the essence of the 6,400,000 Dzogchen tantras, and merely hearing this teaching cuts through birth in the lower realms; merely understanding it causes one to travel to the ground of great bliss (mahasukha); bringing its meaning to mind causes one to accomplish the irreversible state of the spontaneously arisen awareness holder.  For everyone who connects with this teaching there will be great purpose and meaning.” H.E. Ayang Rinpoche, 2009 (Trans. Tyler Dewar). Read a short excerpt of this teaching from Ayang Rinpoche’s 2009 Karma Lingpa Shitro empowerment in Garrison, New York.

“Any one who has family members, friends or loved ones who have died and would like to make donations and dedicate it to them, it [Shitro] is the best opportunity.”  If you would like to make offerings to support the 100 Peaceful and Wrathful Deities Puja online please use the link below, or send a check made out to Amitabha Foundation to P.O. Box 2572, Aptos, California 95001. Be sure to include the names of persons or pets (living or deceased) for whom you are requesting prayers.
